What ZeroTier costs over 36 months

Every figure below is ZeroTier's own published rate, annualised and multiplied out over 36 months at 1 account. Where ZeroTier publishes no rate, the row says so instead of guessing.

Plan Charged List rate At 1 account 36 months
Personal Free $0 $0/mo $0
Essential Flat, per month $18/mo $18/mo $648
Scale Flat, per month $179/mo $179/mo $6,444

Renewal sensitivity: three scenarios, not a forecast

Nobody knows what ZeroTier charges in 2029. The table below is arithmetic on a rate you choose, not a prediction: it compounds the year-one total forward at 0%, 5% and 10% so you can see how much of the 36-month figure is exposed to a renewal you have not negotiated yet.

If the rateYear 1Year 2Year 3Three-year total
Held flat $216 $216 $216 $648
5% a year $216 $226.80 $238.14 $680.94
10% a year $216 $237.60 $261.36 $714.96

Scenario arithmetic on ZeroTier's own published year-one figure. Uplift rates are illustrative inputs, not observed or predicted rates.

What sits outside the ZeroTier list price

Each line, what triggers it, and how to avoid it

Usage and overage

Stated on the pricing page: Additional devices: $2/month on Essential, $1.80/month on Scale

What triggers it. Usage, not people, drives this. That makes it the least predictable component of a three-year ZeroTier commitment and the one most worth instrumenting early.

How to avoid it. Ask ZeroTier for hard caps or alerting rather than silent overage billing. A limit that stops work is recoverable; an invoice you did not authorise is not.

Minimum spend or platform fee

Stated on the pricing page: Enterprise requires 500+ devices minimum

What triggers it. A floor under the whole contract. It changes the arithmetic rather than adding to it: the $648 figure is a maximum of your usage and this minimum, not a sum.

How to avoid it. Check the minimum against your actual headcount before anything else. If you sit below it, ZeroTier's real price to you is the floor, and a competitor without one may win on total cost while losing on list rate.

Unpublished pricing

Stated on the pricing page: Quantum tier mission-critical-only, custom-quoted

What triggers it. Opacity rather than expense. It may cost nothing; the point is that neither you nor this page can currently tell, and a three-year commitment deserves better than that.

How to avoid it. Ask for it in writing, itemised, before shortlisting. A vendor that will not put a number on a component at evaluation stage rarely gets more forthcoming after signature.

Trial and free-tier conversion

Derived from the published tiers: ZeroTier publishes a free tier. Every 36-month figure above starts from the month you leave it, not from signup.

What triggers it. The clock, not a decision, triggers this one. ZeroTier's free entry point ends on a date, and the $18 a month for 1 account rate starts whether or not anyone has finished evaluating.

How to avoid it. Ask for the trial to be extended to cover a full billing cycle of real use. Vendors grant this far more often than buyers ask.

Feature gated to a higher tier

Derived from the published tiers: Moving from Essential to Scale costs a further $5,796 over 36 months at 1 account, which is 9.9x the entry total.

What triggers it. Fires when a requirement lands that Essential does not cover. The jump is rarely proportional: you pay the higher tier across the whole 1 account basis to unlock one capability.

How to avoid it. Ask whether the capability can be bought as an add-on to Essential. Vendors frequently unbundle when the alternative is losing the deal.

How that compares across developer platforms, hosting, and dev tooling

The median developer platforms, hosting, and dev tooling tool we track charges $20 a month at its cheapest paid tier. Re-expressed on the same basis as the figure above, 1 account for 36 months, that median works out at $720.

ZeroTier lands $72 below that figure, 10.0%, measured across 61 tracked tools. A gap either way is a question, not a verdict: cheaper often means fewer included seats or a thinner support tier, and the fee lines below are where that difference usually reappears.

What changes at enterprise scale

Everything above prices the self-serve ladder. Enterprise sits off that ladder, which means the $648 figure is a floor for a large deployment rather than an estimate of one.

Enterprise (500+ devices) and Quantum (mission-critical) tiers are custom-quoted with priority support.

Frequently asked questions

How much does ZeroTier cost over three years?

$648 on Essential at 1 account, billed annually, which is $18 a month held flat for 36 months. That figure covers the subscription only.

Does paying ZeroTier annually save money?

ZeroTier publishes the same effective rate either way on Essential, so there is no prepay discount to capture. Keep the monthly option unless the vendor offers something for the commitment.

What does ZeroTier charge for outside the plan price?

5 lines: usage and overage, minimum spend or platform fee, unpublished pricing, trial and free-tier conversion and 1 more. Each one is broken down above with what triggers it and how to avoid it.

Could ZeroTier cost more at renewal?

Possibly, and nothing on this page predicts it. If the rate held flat the three-year total would be $648; at a hypothetical 10% a year it would be $714.96. Cap the uplift in the contract and the question stops mattering.

Is ZeroTier expensive for developer platforms, hosting, and dev tooling?

Over 36 months it lands $72 below the $720 category median, measured across 61 tracked tools on the same basis.
