What triggers it. Scales with what you store and move, not with headcount. Vultr prices the plan at $2.50 a month for 1 account; this line prices the bytes underneath it, so it grows on a completely different curve to the $90 subscription.
How to avoid it. If a self-hosted option exists, price your own infrastructure and staff time against Vultr's hosted rate honestly. Self-hosting moves cost, it rarely removes it.
Infrastructure and hosting
Stated on the pricing page: Block storage, snapshots, and dedicated IPs billed on top of instance.
What triggers it. The infrastructure bill sitting under the Regular IPv6-only plan. It is usage-shaped, which means it compounds quietly across 36 months rather than arriving as one visible increase.
How to avoid it. Model it at year-3 data volume, not today's. Ask Vultr what a customer with three years of history in cloud iaas typically stores, then price that. The $90 plan figure assumes none of it.
Trial and free-tier conversion
Stated on the pricing page: Managed Kubernetes control planes are free, but worker nodes and load balancers are not.
What triggers it. Triggered by the trial expiring or a free-tier limit being crossed. The $90 figure above starts counting from that moment, not from signature.
How to avoid it. Diarise the conversion date and the cancellation route on day one. An unmanaged trial converting to Regular IPv6-only is the cheapest mistake on this page to prevent and the most common one to make.
Feature gated to a higher tier
Derived from the published tiers: Moving from Regular IPv6-only to VX1 General Purpose costs a further $1,458 over 36 months at 1 account, which is 17.2x the entry total.
What triggers it. Fires when a requirement lands that Regular IPv6-only does not cover. The jump is rarely proportional: you pay the higher tier across the whole 1 account basis to unlock one capability.
How to avoid it. List every gated capability you will plausibly need in three years, then price Vultr at that tier from the start. Comparing entry tiers you will not stay on is how a $90 plan becomes a much larger invoice.
