What triggers it. Triggered by data volume and deployment shape. Choosing self-hosted or a dedicated region moves this from a rounding error to a material share of the term cost.
How to avoid it. Model it at year-3 data volume, not today's. Ask DigitalOcean what a customer with three years of history in cloud iaas typically stores, then price that. The $144 plan figure assumes none of it.
